Engagement format

Engineering Deep Dive

We investigate a single question blocking an engineering decision. We work across code, data, and teams, testing uncertain assumptions in practice.

One question instead of auditing everything

We begin by defining the specific decision to be made. For example:

  • why shipping releases has become unacceptably slow;
  • whether a prototype can withstand production load and security constraints;
  • where an AI workflow is degrading in output quality;
  • which subsystem must evolve before scaling up.

The question defines scope. If answering it spans product, infrastructure, and data, we inspect them together.

How work proceeds

Evidence, verification, decision

  1. Reconstructing the picture

    Reviewing codebase, data, telemetry, and past architectural decisions. Speaking directly with engineers who operate the system daily.

  2. Testing the high-risk segment

    We don’t rely on opinion. If a question can be validated with benchmarks, prototypes, test suites, or a scoped change, we test it against real data.

  3. Reaching a decision

    Comparing alternatives and mapping consequences for each: impacted systems, dependencies, risks, and initial work breakdown.

Deliverables

A solid foundation for the next step

Outcomes depend on the question asked. Typical deliverables include:

  • findings validated by system telemetry and evidence;
  • measurements, prototypes, or practical technical benchmarks;
  • the recommended path and rationale for rejecting alternatives;
  • boundaries and specification for the first implementation phase;
  • dependencies and risks to monitor during execution.

Documentation is thorough enough to decide and begin execution without repeating the same investigation.

When Deep Dive makes sense

This format is ideal when the answer cannot be found in existing docs or a single conversation. It requires system access, fact-checking, or a technical experiment.

If you already know what and where to change, an exploratory phase is unnecessary. You can proceed directly to Embedded Engineering or select a dedicated HOUNDS solution.
